New York Sheep and Wool Festival a.k.a. RHINEBECK

 

I always feel so lucky to be working in the local knitting shop, The Knitting Garage at Stickles, especially during the Sheep and Wool Festival.
My favorite thing about the festival is seeing so many people dressed in their hand-knits.  Which better place to be than in the shop when there is a literal parade of fiber-enthusiasts coming through and showing off their work.
Here are a few of my favorites I took pictures of before it got too busy :)

We also had a trunk show right in the shop!
I could not resist this kit from the Tre Liz . Two strands of sock yarn knitted up into a "blanket" and then dyed; perfect for my two at the time socks ; socks will be guaranteed the same color sequence. BTW:  Have you signed up for my class yet?  Classes start next week.

 
 

RHINEBECK

Yes, I went this year!!! And it was such fun!!!
With so many articles (Blogs, YouTube and otherwise), there is not much I can add.

So, I want to first share two of my favorites:

• This is an article by Mason Dixon Knitting and I like it especially, because it features Julibeth sporting her "Sunset Highways" sweater knitted up in Hedgehog yarn from The Knitting Garage in Rhinebeck (where we both work).  Click on the link to read the full article.

• And this one is a video by Kristi Glass; 1 1/2 hour long but well worth it as by the end you will feel like you went yourself :) and you will have a queue of new projects to start, because everyone's Rhinebeck sweater looks SO GOOD.

•  MY SUNDAY AT THE FAIR

Last , but not least here is me (it was actually cool enough to wear a sweater in the morning until it got too hot and I changed into a different top).

Starting at the bottom left corner and going clockwise: Blue-ish yarn is a raw Silk Yarn I want to use to make a "Boxy Lacy Top", then there are a few pins for myself and as gifts, a "Fleegler Beader" from Ms Babs as I have lots of beads and this tool is supposed to make it easier to add the beads to my knitting :)
The purplish yarn from The Neighborhood Fiber Co. will go with the Hedgehog Yarn I had bought at The Knitting Garage (color doesn't show up well in the picture; it has a lot of blues and purples ). I am planning on the "Trestle" pattern.

• I was also in Sunday's ravelry group picture which I will share as soon as it is published on their site (I am the one in the back row brazenly stretching out my hands to show off my mitts).  I certainly hope I was not in anyone's way. 

• THE KNITTING GARAGE

We had a LOT of fun at the LYS in Rhinebeck, The Knitting Garage at Stickle's.  Especially due to the extended hours (open till 8pm) and wine and snacks and -needles to say- amazing yarns and notions.  The Knitting Garage Yarn (hand-dyed by Leah Stickle) is fabulous, but we also carry Hedgehog, Fibre Company, Madeline Tosh, Brooklyn Tweed, Cascade, Loopy Mango, to name just a few.  AND since Leah was not able to do a booth at the fair (due to health issues), we had all of her pretty hand-sewn project bags in the store. so, the place was hopping and FUN.

When I put together a class schedule for this Fall, I overlooked how busy a time this is for many of you.  End of August/ beginning of September, Summer winding down and getting children ready to go back to school...I was too focused on having the classes end before the Sheep & Wool Festival in October.
So I sheepishly want to apologize...

But here is an idea:  If you are interested in one or more of the three sock knitting classes, you may want to get started on your own and take a private lesson with me when you get to a particularly difficult section in your knitting (Judy's magic cast on, turning the heel, stretchy bind off...).  
Any private lessons based on these classes will be 10% off until October 12.

I am always more than happy to help and this is true for any project you want to tackle this Fall.  Remember the Sheep & Wool Festival is only SIX WEEKS away and that special piece you want to wear should get started soon :)

• On another note:  Did you all enjoy the video I posted the other week?  

Well, Leah was not the only one Kristy interviewed at The Knitting Garage and I am planning on posting another video soon.

My Spring/Summer Classes promise lots of fun and knitting satisfaction.

Get ready for summer with these accessories. 

Some of these knit up in no time at all and are small enough to take along wherever you go.

Please note that I am very flexible with the class schedule and if you are interested in a specific class, but can’t make it to the posted date, I can add a class on a day convenient to you or switch the date.  All classes are for a maximum of three students.

#12 Skirt by Norah Gaughan  (Vogue Knitting) This is a fun flared swingy skirt worked seamless.  In class we will go over the pattern, practice unfamiliar stitches and get started.  No, you will not finish this in class, but you are always welcome to come back with additional questions or problems.

What you need: 920-1265 yards of Sport weight cotton yarn or other fiber of your choice and a US# 5 circular needle.  The $5 pattern is included in the class fee.

Average difficulty rating:  Easy

Turkish Bed Socks by Churchmouse Yarns and Teas  This is a great low sitting summer sock to wear in your clogs, keds etc (NO, you do not need to go to bed in them).  I just finished a pair myself. They are knitted one at the time and the instructions are given for DPN’s, but this can also be knitted on two circulars.  Half of the sock is knitted flat, and then joined in the round.  You should get most if not all of the flat knitting done during class.

What you need: 170-175 yards of fingering or sock weight yarn and US# 3needles (either DPN’s or two circulars).  The $5 pattern is included in the class fee.

Leftie Shawl by Martina Behm So, you have been knitting socks lately and have a lot of pretty sock and fingering weight yarn left over?  This is a great pattern to use up and show off those leftovers.  You will learn how to do German short rows and get started on the shawl.  You will get at least 1-2 sections finished J

What you need:  At least 420 yards of fingering yarn for the MC plus leftover yarns of the same weight (Buy some unicorn tails if you want!)  US# 1 ½ -US# 2 ½ circular needle (depending on your tension and desired denseness of finished shawl).  The $5 pattern is included in the class fee.

Average Difficulty rating: Easy

Jersey Knit Bracelet by Vanessa Christenson  This is a finger knit and you should be able to finish this during the class.  Using your fingers instead of knitting needles may feel awkward at first, but you will get the hang of this.

What you need:  Three fabric strips of 1 inch width approximately 58 inches long. Jersey is a good choice for its stretchiness.  Alternatively you could knit three strips or use some pretty 1” wide ribbon :).  The pattern is free.

All Classes are $55 and include the pattern when applicable. 

Additional help with the project is also included in the class fee.
