APRIL ADVENTURES

I have not posted anything for a while because April was quite a busy month for me.

 Impressions of Düsseldorf

First I went to see family in Düsseldorf, Germany and of course looked up two knitting stores which were recommended to me by fellow raveller Birgit.

Woll Duo

"Woll-Duo" in Düsseldorf Derendorf on Scharnhorststr 16 is a treasure trove with an abundance of choices.  They carry many different yarns including German yarn which seems a bit hard to find in other stores.  They provide friendly knowledgeable service.  I picked out some Unisono by Zitron for my friend Bobbi and it turns out to be the perfect match to the Pagewood Farms Denali in Marine Girls to work on her Daybreak shawl by Stephen West.

Wolle und Schönes

The other store, "Wolle und Schönes" in Düsseldorf Flingern on Lindenstr 219 is more roomy even with outside seating.  Aperfect place for classes and get-togethers.  The choice of yarn is somewhat limited to Lana Grossa, but you can find the right yarn for your project.

Flying over the Alps

Since I had a lay-over in Italy I had the awesome experience of flying over the alps TWICE!

After returning home and getting over my jet-lag it was time to start Spring Classes at A. L. Stickle. It's been very nice meeting a couple of new people!

Finally, on the last Saturday in April, I had a small gathering at my house.  The inspiration was taken from Judy whom I met last May during just such a friendly get together at her house in New Paltz.

Since I have been  giving knitting lessons I have met a number of nice ladies and gentlemen I like to stay in touch with.  Since a teacher by definition is someone you will need only until you yourself have mastered what is taught, I wanted to have the opportunity to meet again and catch up with each other.  We had fun knitting, chatting and relaxing.  Fresh scones (my Mother-in-Law's recipe), German chocolates, Düsseldorf mustard (!) and goodie bags added to the fun and I am determined to host these get-togethers at least once or twice a year.  So, keep posted and try to make it next time :)

Knitting Fundamentals

You will learn how to choose and substitute yarn, different methods of cast-on, the knit and purl stitch, decreases and increases and different methods of bind -off.

Six Sundays from 2-3:30pm beginning April 21 - June 2^rd                                Cost:  $120/each (one participant)

Fun with socks

I am offering two classes, one basic sock knitting class and another class with toe up instruction.

You will learn how to knit in the round on either DPNs or circular needles. You will learn the basic construction of a sock with stretchy cast-on, short rows, picking up stitches and the kitchener stitch as well as the three-needle bind off.  We will meet every other week and should have the socks (or at least one sock) finished after four instruction periods.

Candle Flame Scarf

This scarf was designed to use the Madeline Tosh Pashima.  For such a soft and special yarn I wanted to use a lacy and unusual design which would look good on both sides.  The candle flame pattern looks different on the two sides, but equally intriguing.

Size:      After blocking: 62”x 8 ½”

           

Materials: 

Yarn:                      1 skein of Madeline Tosh Pashmina or any DK weight yarn for a total of 360 yards.

Needles:              US size 5

Instructions:

Cast on 42 stitches.

Knit the first four rows in garter stitch (knit every row). 

Then start to work the 24 row candle flame pattern below.

Repeat these 24 rows until the desired length has been reached. Stop knitting in the candle flame pattern either after row 12 or after row 24.  Then work four rows in garter stitch (knit every row). 

Cast off loosely and block.
Note:  Someone recently asked how to make this shawl wider. Here is my answer for everyone’s benefit:
The pattern repeat is over 12 stitches of the original CO stitches and each repeat adds about 2 1/2 inches. So for every 2 1/2 inches of added width add 12 stitches to your CO. Let’s say you want your shawl to be approximately 24 inches wide instead of 8 1/2 inches you would add six lace repeats for a total of nine lace repeats and cast on 9 x 12 + 6 stitches = 114 stitches.

Note de l’auteur : Des personnes lui ont demandé comment faire pour avoir une écharpe plus large. Voici sa réponse.

Sur le rang de montage, le motif « Flamme de bougie » se répète toutes les 12 mailles, et chaque répétition rajoute environ 6,25 cm de large à l’écharpe. Vous pouvez donc augmenter l’écharpe par section de 6,25 cm, en ajoutant autant de fois que nécessaire 12 mailles sur le rang de montage de l’écharpe. Par exemple, vous voulez que votre écharpe fasse approximativement 60 cm de large, à la place des 21,25 cm, vous devez alors rajouter 6 répétitions (6 répétition = environ 38 cm). Vous aurez alors au total 9 répétitions du motif à faire tout au long de l’écharpe. Et pour cela, vous devrez monter : 9 x 12 + 6 mailles (de lisière) = 114 mailles, au départ, sur votre aiguille.
