Happy Holdidays

I want to wish everyone a happy holiday season.

This can be a very stressful time of rushing around and over exerting oneself.  To me this is even more reason to sit down, pick up my needles, take some deep breaths and relax, working on my simplest knitting project. I feel how the action of knitting in a steady rhythm slows down my heart rate and melts away anxieties. Give it a try.

Along these lines I want to share a good gift idea.  Sign up yourself and a loved one for knitting instructions.  There is no better way to bond with your friend, daughter, son etc than spending time learning a new skill together.

Have a wonderful time with friends and family and a very happy New Year!

Cabled Headband- Free Pattern

Cabled Headband  pattern by Doris Formby

For a free download in pdf format click here: Cabled Headband

I wrote this pattern to show off the beautiful Cashmere yarn at the Knitting Garage in Rhinebeck, but this can be knitted in any aran or worsted weight yarn.

Material: 1 skein of Cashmere Aran Lotus or similar yarn approximately 100 yards
Needles: US 8

Instructions:  Cast on 22 stitches  in the provisional cast on method. Alternatively you can cast on in your favorite stretchy cast on.
Proceed as follows:
Row 1 (Right Side): K1, P1, K3, P2, K8, P2, K3, P1, K1
Row 2 (Wrong Side): K1, P1, K1, P2, K2, P8, K2, P2, K1, P1, K1
Row 3 (Cable Row): K1, P1, K3, P2, C8B, P2, K3, P1, K1
Row 4: Same as Row 2
Row 5, 7:  Same as Row 1
Row 6, 8: Same as Row 2
Row 9 (Cable Row ):  Same as Row 3

Repeat Rows 4-9 twenty more times for a total of 22 cables for about 20" or until you reached the desired length.  Then repeat rows 4-6 once more.
(This is simply a seed stitch pattern over the first and last three sts of each row, two bands of k2 and a cable over 8 sts framed by purl sts).  It is an easy to remember pattern.

Finishing:  Take off the scrap yarn from your provisional cast on and put the 22 sts on a needle parallel to your 22 sts of your last row.  Now join in Kitchener stitch or three-needle bind off (make sure not to twist the band).
Alternate Method:  Cast off and sew the piece together in mattress stitch making sure to keep the look of the pattern.

Wear and enjoy!
